Managing the Boards and JEE preparation at the same time is a difficult task which gives a lot of stress and anxiety to students. The format of both the exams is very different and this causes a lot of stress to students. The Board exams focus more on subjective type questions based on the NCERT books. The students need to be thorough with the content in the NCERT text books to be able to score well in these exams. On the other hand, JEE tests the students’ understanding of the concepts through MCQs. This needs the students to have a thorough understanding of all the concepts. Mere rote learning is not going to help them.
Know the Board and JEE Exam Pattern and Syllabus Thoroughly
The first step in trying to successfully clear both the exams is to know the paper pattern and syllabus of the exams thoroughly. For the JEE entrance, the students must have a conceptual and application-based knowledge of the subject whereas for the Board exams, a theoretical knowledge of the NCERT text books is a must. The JEE entrance tests the students through MCQs whereas the Board exams have more of subjective questions. The Boards do not have any negative marking which is there in the JEE exams.
Concentrate on Basics and Numericals
A strong foundation of basic concepts will help you succeed in Boards as well as the JEE entrance. Whatever the exam, the basic concepts will not change. You need to study the same concepts for both the exams. While preparing for your Board exams, concentrate on understanding the concepts. Once the concepts are clear, get down to solving as many questions and numericals as you can. With this approach, you will also be able to crack the JEE entrance exam.
NCERT Textbooks
Understanding the basic concepts and solving tricky questions are two different things. If you read the NCERT textbooks at least 4 or 5 times and also go through all the examples and questions, you will easily bridge the gap between the fundamental concepts and the tricky questions.
Be sure to acquaint yourself with the latest syllabus and the topics that have been deleted as CBSE has reduced the syllabus by about 30%. Since the different Boards have reduced different topics from the syllabus, the NTA has decided to include choice questions in section B to make it easy for the students.
Solve Previous Years papers
Solving previous years papers is a sure shot way of getting familiar with the exam pattern. It gives you an insight in your weaknesses, hones your skills and strengthens your concepts. Since you preparing for both Boards and JEE, you need to solve the previous years papers of both the exams. It also helps you to develop the right temperament for the exams.
The students must aim to attempt all the questions in the Board exams. On the other hand, in JEE, since there is negative marking, you should attempt only those questions that you are confident of.
Identify the Common Topics
Some topics are bound to be common for both the exams. Preparing these topics first means a majority of syllabus will be covered. An in-depth study of these chapters and their practice questions will save your time, strengthen your concepts and prepare you simultaneously for both the exams.
Make a Schedule
No task can be achieved without a proper schedule. It is imperative that you prepare a timetable with your time judiciously divided for the preparation of both the exams. Following a proper schedule helps you maintain a proper study routine and you will always be on track and complete your revision in time.
Practice writing subjective answers for Boards
The JEE exam is based on MCQs and numericals whereas the Boards test a student’s knowledge through subjective questions. A written practice of these subjective questions within the given time frame is necessary so that you know if you can complete the paper in the stipulated time. Proper planning gives you the required speed to complete the Board paper in time. Moreover, practising the answers in writing ensures that your answers are well written and gets you good scores in the Boards. Attempting mock tests in the stipulated time period is also a good practice.
Preparing for both the Boards as well JEE at the same time is definitely a difficult task but not impossible. If you keep the points highlighted in this article in mind, you will definitely succeed in both the exams and get excellent scores.
