How should JEE & NEET aspirants manage time efficiently

Tips for JEE and NEET Aspirants on How to Manage Time Efficiently

Time is the most important resource that a student has in hand. How he or she achieves the goals set depends on how wisely this resource is used. With the competition increasing every year, the stress levels of students are also on the rise. All these years, people have been relying on hard work for success. Yes, definitely hard work is a key element towards success but equally important or rather, more important is smart work. The way students manage time determines how smartly they work. And this is what gives them the winning edge, the extra mile that takes them to their desired goal. Here are a few tips to help students utilize this non-renewable resource – time – in the best possible way. Make a priority list The syllabus that a student has to cover for the NEET and JEE exams is so vast that you cannot afford to study in an unplanned, haphazard manner. Especially during revision during last few months, you need to prioritize your tasks in such a manner that the chapters that have maximum weightage are covered first. The topics that take more time should be taken up first. Also prioritize your topics on the basis of how difficult you find them. The topics that you find difficult to understand must be tackled first. Make a daily check list You must have long term as well as short term plans for your study pattern. A daily check list must be made the previous night which will be followed the next morning. The check list must be based on your priority list. Set achievable goals You need to set daily goals that you will accomplish by the end of the day. The goals that you set should not be so easy that they leave you with a lot of free time neither should they be so unrealistic that you cannot achieve them. That makes one lose confidence in oneself. Evade distractions One of the major problems that students face is lack of concentration. In such cases, try to raise your concentration levels day by day. If you are able to concentrate for two hours on the first day, then set two and a half hours as your target for the next day. This can be done by consciously avoiding distractions during your study hours. The internet should be off and the phone must be kept away. For further tips on how to avoid distractions, you can refer to our blog on the same topic. Keep buffer time Whenever you are planning your time schedule, make sure you keep aside some buffer time. Do not make a tight, minute-to-minute schedule. At times, you might need more time to understand a concept than you planned. Apart from that, there might be some adverse conditions that you need to handle. Keep aside some time for all these situations. Take enough breaks We, as human beings often need breaks from whatever we do on a daily basis. Every student is bound to reach a saturation level at some point or the other. Studying beyond your saturation point is not going to help you at all. You will just end up wasting your time. Instead, take the necessary break for some time by indulging in any of your hobbies for some time. But the break must be short. This will help you come back with a vengeance, fully recharged. Do not take up any addictive activity during the break. If you follow these tips, you will increase your levels of concentration and you will be able to get more out of the time you invest in your studies. This kind of smart work will ensure that you crack the exams and fulfill your dreams of becoming a doctor or an IITian.

Competition in various scholastic exam like JEE, NEET, KVPY, Olympiad, GUJCET, NTSE etc. has increased manifold over the years. Hard work is still the key to success but along with hard work, it is smart work that matters. More than spending a lot of time studying where you are disturbed by a lot distractions, it is better to spend less time but with more concentration and less distractions. Unfortunately, nowadays there are many things that cause distractions to students. Here are a few tips that will help you avoid distractions and get better grades. Work according to a proper schedule While studying, students need to juggle between multiple deadlines, assignments and examinations. In such cases, they need to make a proper schedule or timetable as per their deadlines. They need to prioritize and work as per the schedule. Without a well-organized schedule, you may end up getting distracted by the other deadlines and assignments while working on one. Keep the phone away The cell phone causes maximum distractions while studying. Even if you do not attend to any calls during your study time, the constant notifications and text or WhatsApp messages are a major source of distraction. It is better to either hand over your phone to the elders in the family while studying or keep it in a cupboard or drawer. Use Headphones It may not always be possible to have a noise free area to study. The use of noise cancelling headphones will help you to concentrate on your studies by making you immune to the noise around you. Choose the Right Spot Every individual has his or her own favourite or comfortable spot to study. For some, it could be the desk in their bedroom, for some it may be the balcony or the terrace. The spot you choose must have proper lighting so as not to strain your eyes. Keep the Desk Clear In case you are working at your desk, make sure that it is not cluttered. Just keep the books you need. Unnecessary clutter is definitely not the right environment to study in and leads to distractions. Take Breaks when needed Studying for a long time leads to a saturation point after a few hours. Even if you force yourself to continue studying after that, it is not going to be any use. You will not be able to grasp what you are studying. It will just be a waste of time. Instead, it is better to take breaks at saturation points and come back rejuvenated. Take enough sleep However large your syllabus may be, a proper sleep is very essential if you want to make the most of your study time. Sleep deprivation not only hinders your levels of concentration and grasping power, but also affects your health. With proper sleep, you will be able to understand better and remember for a longer time. Never Study on an empty stomach Hunger is another distraction that cause lack of concentration. Your hunger pangs will not let you concentrate and focus and your trips to the kitchen and refrigerator will increase. Even if you are not hungry, it is advisable to keep some snacks handy so that you don’t have to get up time and again. Keep these tips in mind and then see the difference in your concentration levels. Obviously when the concentration levels increase, the retention is greater. This will positively affect your grades and you will come out with flying colours.

Do not underestimate the importance of knowing your JEE syllabus thoroughly. The topics and their content must be known to you like the back of your hand. Working in an unorganized, unplanned manner Most of the students aspiring for IIT JEE attend professional classes. Making a regular timetable and sticking to it becomes very important for them. Professional guidance is a must but along with that, you cannot undermine the importance of self-study. A timetable helps you maintain a balance between, school, classes and self-study. Neglecting a subject All the three subjects, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics are equally important. All three need to be given equal importance. Neglecting any one of these subjects could result in your failure to get your desired rank. Not having a thorough understanding of the basic concepts The JEE exam does not focus on rote learning. It is imperative that they get the XI grade concepts cleared in XI itself. There is no time in class XII to go back to the previous class for concept clarification. Not taking practice tests Taking sufficient number of mock tests in a similar environment gives you the confidence to crack the exam. The practice papers help in time management during the exam. You get the practice of completing the paper in the given time. Not taking breaks when needed Every human being needs a break at times. Whenever you feel saturated, take short breaks of a couple of days and go out to some resort or somewhere you can relax. Studying when saturated is not going to help as your mind will not be able to take in anything. Don’t leave anything for the last moment You will end up in a state of panic if you leave things for the last moment. Make sure that you are done with everything before time. Some of these techniques are: Realistic Time Table Studying for any competitive exam can seem to be difficult. The curriculum is exhaustive, and you may feel lost at times. However, if you have planned your schedule realistically, you will not have to worry about the vastness of the syllabus. Doubt Clarification Make sure to assign atleast one day every week for doubt clarification with respective faculty in each subject. You may stumble upon many doubts during self study. Make a separate note of all your doubts and on that particular day of the week, discuss them with the faculty and clarify all doubts. This is a structured way to clarify all your doubts. Don’t pile up your doubts and procrastinate over them as it might affect understanding of concepts in future chapters. Plan and study in a Conceptual Manner You may have to mug up quite a few formulas in Chemistry and even in Physics, but the majority of the syllabus requires you to study in a logical and applied manner. The key to selection with a good rank is to master the fundamentals of each chapter first and then move on to complicated concepts. Solving a good number of numericals in each concept is an effective way to master the topic. Regular Mock Tests and Quizzes Take as many practice tests and quizzes as you can. By appearing for mock tests frequently, you get the feel of the real exam. Besides solving questions, through these tests, you learn important skills like time management, how to improve your accuracy with each attempt.
